We ship Mon-Thursday and some Fridays. Please know USPS and UPS often say "delivered" but it takes an additional day or two for the package to actually BE delivered --yes, it's annoying! We have to deal with this every single day, this is not in our control.
On US Federal Holidays no mail moves - you *may* see a label print, but it will leave the next mailing day.

Please keep shipping insurance (Package Protection) in your cart. If you take it out, you will have to file your own claim with USPS or UPS.

Did you know we will send a return label to you for returning items? When people "refuse" a delivery, it costs us triple the original postage to claim the parcel back. PLEASE DO NOT do this! EMAIL US or call us so we can handle it. Our contact page is here.
PRE ORDERS ship as stated in the listing -- usually these take some time to arrive. IF YOU COMBINE in stock items with a preorder they will ship TOGETHER at one time. If you file a chargeback on a preorder I will ban you from my website for the rest of time. I've only had to do this once, but it is totally rediculous to make up a story about arrival times when it is NOT in my control. WE DO NOT HOLD BACK items- there is NO ROOM or time to do this. I've stayed until midnight shipping preorders because they arrive at 5pm, just to get them out the door. BE COOL or be banned for life.
We do NOT cover import fees or duties if shipping out of the USA. Tariffs/duties have NOTHING to do with our company, we have no control over them.

Sew a backpack with room for your everyday essentials using the Trina Backpack PDF sewing pattern. Choose from three sizes and customize your bag with woven fabric, soft vinyl, cork, PU leather, or vegan leather.

Backpack features
- Two zippered security pockets
- One interior slip-in pocket made from vinyl or cotton
- Two expanding side pockets for water bottles
- Adjustable straps and a hanging loop
- Optional interior key fob holder
Three size options
- Small: 12" × 13" × 3"
- Medium: 15" × 16" × 4"
- Full / Large: 16.5" × 18.5" × 5". This size is really large!
Fabric and interfacing
Use woven fabrics, soft vinyls such as Metallic Crackle, PU or vegan leather, or a combination of cork and quilting cotton. The example bags were made with Metallic Crackle vinyl and quilting cotton.
Foam interfacing is the designer's preferred choice for a bag that holds its shape. Fusible fleece and quilt batting have also been tested and create a softer, squishier backpack that won't stand up like a foam-interfaced bag.
Materials and supplies for the full-size backpack
The quantities below are for the full-size backpack.
- Exterior fabric: approximately 1.25 yards
- Lining fabric: approximately 1.75 yards
- Optional interior slip-in pocket: one 19" × 10" piece of vinyl; cotton can also be used for the pocket
- Webbing: 2.5 yards. Heavy-duty cotton or nylon-blend webbing, 1.5" wide, is recommended
- Binding: two packages of Wright's Extra-Wide Double-Fold Binding Tape, or approximately 6 yards
- Main zipper: one 30" double-headed zipper. A handbag zipper is preferred for its wider tape; the original supply list specifies 4.5 or 5 mm
- Pocket zippers: two 12" zippers
- Elastic: two 7" pieces of 1/4" elastic
- D-rings: two, 1.5" wide
- Adjustable sliders: two, 1.5" wide
- Optional key ring holder: one 1/2" lobster clasp
- Lining interfacing: Pellon SF101 for all lining pieces except pockets, approximately 2.5 yards of 20"-wide interfacing
- Body interfacing: one 38" × 58" package of ByAnnie's Soft and Stable or Pellon Flex-Foam for the main body pieces and zipper panel. Fusible fleece or quilt batting can be substituted for a softer bag
Webbing note: Use polypropylene webbing with caution. The designer has experienced broken straps made with polypropylene and recommends avoiding it unless all raw ends can be treated with a lighter or non-fraying glue.
What's included in the pattern?
The PDF includes three size options, a cutting chart for easy reference, and full-color photos and diagrams throughout. The pattern has been tested by sewists with varying skill levels.
As with all Sew HungryHippie patterns, this one is easy to follow and make. It makes a great backpack for school, travel and more. I made this for my niece and modified the bag so it would be wider, added a padded slip pocket inside, and more. I love that this bag allows for customizations to suit your needs. I will definitely be making more Trina Backpacks! 😃
